The MILLS family lived in Newcastle Upon Tyne from the 1800's at least. They seem to have been mostly Joiners or blacksmiths. City research brings its own problems (it can be a needle in a haystack sometimes) but I am gradually building up the picture of life for the 19th century families. I have a large amount of data on the HUMBLE and BARKAS families.
1. John MILLS, cooper, of Gateshead, Co. Durham marries Margaret LENOX, in 1799 at St Andrews, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their children;
Cuthbert born 1800, John born 1803, William born 1805, Margaret born 1807
2. John MILLS (1803 - ), blacksmith marries Jane HUMBLE, daughter of Nicholas HUMBLE and Margery FRAME in 1828 at St Johns, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their children;
Jane born 1831, John born 1835 died 1887, Nicholas born 1837, William born 1842 , Henry born 1844, Emily born 1847

3. John MILLS (1835 - 1887), joiner marries Mary Susanna BARKAS(1827 - 1906) , daughter of Robert BARKAS and Margaret BOWLS in 1859 at the Register Office, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their children;
John born 1861, Jane Ann born 1864, Mary Emily (1867 - by 1881), Nicholas Henry (1869 - 1925)
John and Mary MILLS ran a second hand furniture shop on Percy Street in the City from the mid 1870s until Mary's death in 1906.

4. Nicholas Henry MILLS (1869 - 1925), blacksmith marries Catherine Sarah Ann HUTCHISON (1869 - 1926) daughter of Thomas HUTCHISON and Catherine DUNN in 1895 at St Andrews, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their children;
Nicholas Henry (1900 - 1968), Richard D H born 1904, Rhoda Florence born 1906
5. Nicholas Henry MILLS (1900 -1968), RAF Aircraftsman II, marries Edith Moore HOLDEN, (1900 -1948), daughter of George HOLDEN and Mary Jane WILSON at the Register Office, Gateshead in 1924.
WILSON - Mary Jane spent her early years in Nova Scotia, Canada where many descendants of her family still live. As well as Wilsons, this family includes MacDonalds, MacIntyres and MacPhersons. Contact me for more information.
