The HICKS family were almost all landless labourers living in and around the market town of Burford in south west Oxfordshire until the late 19th century when Charles HICKS moved to Hertfordshire They never appear to have needed poor relief and lived quiet, hardworking lives, usually to quite a reasonable age.
1. Charles HICKS died in 1792. He was married to Mary and their children were;
John born 1751, Sarah born 1753, Charles born 1755, Mary born 1758, Ann born 1760, William (1761 - 1838), Joseph (1763 - 1833), Robert born 1765 Thomas (1767 -1767), Thomas born 1768, Ann born 1770, Elizabeth born 1772
2. William HICKS (1761 - 1838) married Anne HALL in 1785. Their children were;
William (1788 - 1802), Thomas (1789 - 1802), Charles born 1792, Ann born 1794 Mary born 1797, Sarah (1800 - 1802), William (1803 - 1803), William born 1805
2. Joseph HICKS (1763 - 1833) married Elizabeth BLACKUM in 1796. Their children were;
Mary (1796 - 1861), Thomas (1798 - 1806), Elizabeth born 1800, William (1801 - 1875), Charles born 1803, Charles born 1804, Ann born 1805,John (1806 - 1808), Thomas born 1808, Richard (1810 - 1811), Emma born 1813, Elizabeth (1815 - 1816)
3. William HICKS (1801 - 1875) married Sabina BROWN , daughter of Robert BROWN and Hannah WORKMAN in about 1834. Their children were;
Sabina born 1836, Edward born 1838 (married Alice ROBINSON in 1868), Mathew born 1840, Thomas (1841 - 1845) ,Charles (1844 - 1925), William (1847 - 1856), Daniel born 1850 Ellen born 1852, Joseph born 1857
4. Charles HICKS (1844 - 1925) married Susanna SADLER, daughter of Thomas and Mary SADLER in 1864 in Burford. Their Children were;
Louisa (1865 - 1868), Alice born 1867, William born 1869, Martha born 1870, Albert Edward (1872 - 1952), Daniel born 1873, Mathew (1876 - 1877), Tom born 1879
5. Albert Edward HICKS (1872 - 1952) married Florence Clara WINTER, daughter of Montague WINTER and Eliza GRISTWOOD in 1903 at St Andrews, Watford in Hertfordshire. Their children were;
Ernest Edward (1904 - 1988), Isobel (1906 - 1907), May Eileen (1907 - 1991), Arthur Edwin (1909 - 1987), Denis Harold (1911 - 1917), Lenard Arthur (1917 - 1992).
6. Ernest Edward HICKS (1904 - 1988) married Ivy Blanche COUCH daughter of Edgar COUCH and Blanche BARHAM in 1925 at St Pauls Church, Langleybury, Hertfordshire.
Ernest Edward and Ivy HICKS are my maternal grandparents.
